Apple Shortcake

2 c. Flour
1 tsp. Cream of Tartar
1/2 tsp. Soda
Pinch of Salt
3 Tbsp. Sugar
1/4 c. Butter
1 Egg, beaten
1/4 c. Milk
12-14 Apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1 1/2 c. Granulated Sugar
1/2 tsp. Nutmeg
1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
1/2 c. Water
1/2 tsp. Vanilla

Mix together flour, cream of tartar, soda, salt and 3 Tbsp. sugar.
Using a pastry blender cut butter into flour mixture until consistency of coarse meal.
Mix in milk and egg to make a soft dough.
Knead dough for a few minutes on a lightly floured board.
Butter a 2 qt. baking dish.
Roll dough out to size of baking dish to be used.
Mix together remaining sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. toss apples to coat.
Put apples in baking dish.
Pour water and vanilla over apples.
Roll out dough to size of baking dish and place dough on top of apples.
Seal dough to edge of dish.
Bake 30-40 minutes at 350°F.
Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
