
Made From Scratch Southern Red Velvet Cake

1 1/2 c. Granulated Sugar
2 eggs
2 Tbsp. Baking Cocoa
2 oz. Red Food Coloring
1 tsp. Salt
1 c. Buttermilk (or 4Tbsp. buttermilk powder mixed with water)
2 1/4 c. Flour
1 tsp. Vanilla
1 tsp. Soda
1 tsp. Vinegar
Cream shortening, sugar and eggs.
Make paste of cocoa and food coloring.
Add to creamy mixture.
Sift flour and salt together.
Add flour and salt mixture to creamy mixture then add buttermilk and vanilla.
Beat well.
Fold in vinegar and soda (don’t beat).
Spray pan with Pam with Flour
Bake 30-35 minutes at 350° F.
Frosting:
3Tbsp. Flour
1 c. Water
1 c. Butter (2 sticks)
1 c. Granulated Sugar
1 tsp. Vanilla
Boil flour and water until thick whisk right away.
Cool until cold.
Cream butter, sugar, and vanilla until fluffy.
Add cool mixture and beat.
